MAKEUP MUSEUM OPENING IN NEW YORK!

The Makeup Museum brings the affluent history of the beauty industry to New York. Opening in the Meatpacking district in May 2020, the museum will celebrate the history of makeup and its impact on society. The museum, which will exhibit many exhibitions at different times, will focus on 10 years at each booth, revealing the 10,000-year history of make-up. The first booth of the Makeup Museum will be “Pink Jungle: 1950s Makeup in America”. This booth will shed light on the iconic makeup trends and the influence of the most striking ladies of the period, such as Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo and Audrey Hepburn.

Doreen Bloch, founder and director of the Makeup Museum, said, “The Makeup Museum is a critical institution for New York City and the global cultural landscape. Makeup has 10,000 000 titles spanning from the ancient Egyptians kohl pulling, the Japanese to geisha makeup with kabuki brushes, drag queen makeup and their impact on pop culture today. It has years of history.” she said.

The 50s-themed booth will offer visitors an immersive experience by displaying vintage items such as skin care items used by Monroe and Garbo. Bloch said the museum started from the 50s, as this period is characterized as the birth and rise of brands such as Elizabeth Arden, Helena Rubinstein, Max Factor and Sally Hansen, as the birth of the contemporary makeup industry. Leading executives and make-up artists of the industry also come to a center for the museum. The sweetness brands Erno Laszlo and Alcone sponsored the first stand of the museum.

According to NPD Group’s 2019 first quarter numbers, The Makeup Museum opens at a time when the US makeup industry is experiencing significant declines in the sales of big brands such as MAC, Urban Decay and Anastasia Beverly Hills. A number of new and emerging makeup brands are attracting many of the consumers’ attention. Chief among these brands is Kylie Cosmetics, which Kylie Jenner sold 51% of her shares to Coty for $600 million just last week. Kylie Cosmetics is followed by Glossier brand with a millennium aesthetic, which opened its county pop-up store in London yesterday.

The semi-permanent space of the museum will be located at 94 Gansevoort Street and will be open for six months starting next spring.
